Define bias:

  • prejudice in favor of or against one thing, person, or group compared with another, usually in a way considered to be unfair.
  • cause to feel or show inclination or prejudice for or against someone or something.

Define personal bias on mentoring arrangement:

  • Those working in a mentoring relationship may develop friendships over time.
  • It is important to have a clear mentoring relationship and not allow personal bias to influence professional actions.
  • Stay mindful of maintaining confidentiality, objectivity and equal partnership.
  • Personal bias is when you have a preference for one way of doing things and are not open to any other suggestions. You may feel that mentoring and deep friendships go hand in hand - which is clearly outside the scope of a mentoring arrangement

Discuss the awareness required in dealing with personal bias in a mentoring arrangement:

  • Most importantly for the mentor is the need to manage his/her personal bias in the mentoring arrangement
