Discuss ways to eliminate reliance of the mentee on the mentor:
- Mentor needs to focus on the development of critical thinking skills
- Must use the asking of questions - avoid telling
- Communication skills - listening and hearing what the issue really is
- More focus on the personal challenges - this will build self-confidence
Discuss situations where tact is required in navigating reliance in the mentoring arrangement:
- During conversation it is apparent that they are struggling and may require deviating from the process
- The reliance may stem from some deep seated personal issues which need to be resolved
- Dealing with root cause rather than a bandaid requires greater tact
